In 2021, PV supply chain see dramatic price fluctuations. Polysilicon shortages crippled production output across the supply chain, whilst energy intensity and consumption control and power rationing imposed since September affected overall raw material supply. Against these backdrops, not only supply chain prices, but prices for module BOM surged. Overall module production cost in October was estimated to have come in above RMB 1.9/W.

Having been affected by price hikes across the supply chain in the first half of the year, it was commonplace for module makers to renegotiate prices with clients and to see orders being canceled. This year, profits returned to polysilicon and wafer makers, contracting in cell and module sectors. As a result, some module makers turned conservative in terms of shipment targets, dialing back the figure in interim financial statements. However, Tier-1 module makers, with advantages in vertical integration and brand impact, dominated module shipment amid gloomy profit outlook. Top 10 manufacturers accounted for more than 80% of market share, squeezing out medium and small-scaled module makers. This year, the module sector may still see 40-45% of increase in production capacity, which will reach beyond 470 GW by the end of the year, estimated PV InfoLink.

Module makers appeared reserved towards price quotes next year amid lofty production costs. Presently, prices for modules rated beyond 500 W in the fourth quarter this year and the first quarter of 2022 is projected to sustain at RMB 2.05-2.13/W and USD 0.275-0.29/W, respectively. However, end user acceptance is low, except for some slim number of orders sealed by residential distributed projects, utility-scale ground-mounted projects in China and abroad ceased negotiating at current price levels.
