G12R modules widely showcased as Indian manufacturers continue to upgrade their product portfolios

At Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo 2026, the G12R format emerged as one of the key focuses of Indian PV manufacturers’ product strategies. As local manufacturers continue to expand their cell and module production capacity, G12R is increasingly being incorporated into new production line plans and product development, reflecting the Indian market’s shift toward larger-format, higher-power modules. Based on the products showcased at the exhibition, G12R has become an important indicator of trends in India's domestic module manufacturing industry, drawing greater attention to the alignment of cell production capacity, equipment configurations, and module specifications.

China's PV technology export restrictions add uncertainty to India's domestic capacity expansion

On October 16, 2026, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) issued Announcement No. 48, seeking public comments on proposed revisions to the Catalogue of Technologies Prohibited and Restricted from Export. The proposal covers 12 PV technologies related to the manufacture of polysilicon, wafers, crystalline silicon (c-Si) cells, and modules. All covered technologies currently require temporary registration before export. Once the revisions are finalized, five technologies are expected to be prohibited from export and seven restricted, the latter requiring export licenses.

For India, the implications of this Chinese policy change extend beyond equipment procurement costs and delivery schedules. More importantly, India's domestic cell manufacturing industry is still expanding capacity and remains highly dependent on Chinese supply chains for equipment imports, production line installation and commissioning, and production ramp-up. If Chinese equipment exports are subsequently subject to restrictions, equipment deliveries and commissioning schedules for some new production lines in India could be affected, potentially delaying the start-up of cell production capacity originally planned for late 2026 through 2027.

Cell supply shortfall persists amid severe module overcapacity

According to InfoLink's data, India's nameplate cell production capacity is estimated to remain below 50 GW as of 4Q26. Once the capacity utilization rates at cell production lines are factored in, actual cell supply falls well short of end-market demand. By contrast, India's nameplate module production capacity has exceeded 200 GW, highlighting a substantial disparity in capacity between the upstream and downstream segments. The imbalance between insufficient cell supply and module oversupply persists in India's PV manufacturing industry.

Looking ahead, amid changes in China's PV equipment export policies, whether India's planned cell capacity expansion can proceed on schedule and reach mass production will be critical to improving domestic supply capabilities. Meanwhile, as formats such as G12R gain wider adoption, Indian manufacturers will also need to adjust their production line configurations and product strategies accordingly. Differences in production costs and price trends between vertically integrated manufacturers and module-only producers will also serve as important indicators of developments in India's PV market.
