Polysilicon shortage in the PV supply chain has been the center of attention this year. The disproportional supply and demand results in surging polysilicon prices, hitting 10-year high. This led to silicon costs to rise across the supply chain, keeping solar prices elevated.

As of the third quarter, annual polysilicon capacity has exceeded 400 GW, and that figure will increase rapidly in the fourth quarter to over 500 GW, hitting 94% of YoY increase at the end of this year. This will allow polysilicon shortage to ease from 2023.

In 2023, new polysilicon capacity will come online at a faster pace, enabling production to increase significantly. With high consolidation of leading manufacturers in the polysilicon segment, what will new entrants face in such a competition? Manufacturers are paying close attention to whether increasingly commissioning of new capacity in the second half of 2023 will accelerate the pace of polysilicon decline or whether new polysilicon capacity expansion will be materialized as scheduled or delayed.

In terms of mono-Si wafers, ingot capacity has grown markedly over the past two years.
