Back in 2022–2023, the residential energy storage market and competitive landscape were markedly different from what they are today. After several years of highs and lows, the market has undergone significant changes.
On the one hand, the market has evolved from one primarily centered on Europe to one with broader growth across Europe, Australia, Asia, and other regions, with demand emerging or gaining momentum in many countries worldwide. On the other hand, some established players have lost ground, while some young, emerging players are rapidly moving into leading positions.
According to InfoLink Consulting’s Global Residential Energy Storage Market and Shipment Database, Fox ESS ranked first globally by shipment volume in 1H26. Founded in 2019, Fox ESS has gone from zero to the top in just seven years. Its growth provides a useful case study for the industry: In the new era of residential energy storage, what are manufacturers really competing on?
Products: Combining quality and affordability to find the optimal home configuration
A widely circulated saying among Australia’s installer community goes, “Fox ESS is Premium and Budget At The Same Time.” This precisely sums up the brand’s positioning.
Many distributors and installers cite reasonable, accessible pricing that meets the needs of most households as a key reason why they are willing to recommend Fox ESS products to customers. Long-term partnerships have also demonstrated the products’ performance and reliability; as a result, distributors and installers have received positive feedback from end users. Together, these factors make Fox ESS a well-balanced choice that offers both quality and affordability.
The logic is often that simple: products that are easy to recommend and dependable in use naturally earn the favor of distributors, installers, and customers alike.
Behind this, of course, is the Fox ESS team’s continued pursuit of high product quality. In March 2026, the combination of the Fox ESS PQ-H3-Ultra-10.0 and EQ3300-5 achieved a System Performance Index (SPI) of 97.0%, ranking first in the 10 kW category and demonstrating its high efficiency and low-loss performance. This marked the first time a Chinese inverter manufacturer had outperformed German manufacturers to take the top spot in testing conducted by a European laboratory.
Fox ESS also offers a highly diverse product portfolio. Unlike companies such as Tesla, which maintain a highly streamlined SKU strategy, Fox ESS offers products across the EQ, CQ, EP, Avocado, and Stackable all-in-one (AIO) series, among others, spanning a wide range of form factors and configurations. Its portfolio includes both AIO and split systems, as well as compact wall-mounted and floor-standing stackable designs.
This breadth, however, is not about expanding the product portfolio for its own sake. Rather, it is guided by the needs of individual markets. Fox ESS promotes different product series in markets such as Germany, the UK, and Australia to better suit local household use cases. This market-specific approach is also an important reason its products have proven highly popular across multiple markets.
Market presence: Deepening localization to support distributor and installer business growth
Building trust with channel partners takes time, particularly in markets such as Europe and Australia. Distributors and installers often care most about whether manufacturers are genuinely committed to developing a strong local presence, whether they can provide timely support and after-sales service when product issues arise, and whether they invest sufficiently in product training and promotion when new products are launched.
Building, managing, and investing in distribution channels is inherently easier said than done. What sets manufacturers apart is their ability to build robust channel networks and establish a solid local presence.
In Poland alone, Fox ESS conducted a roadshow across 21 cities in August and September 2026, continuously strengthening ties with local partners through technical training, knowledge sharing, and open dialogue. In the UK, Fox ESS not only operates a dedicated website but has also established a full-service local center in Coventry, providing technical support, training, logistics, after-sales service, and other services.
Fox ESS has thus built a strong partner ecosystem across its key markets. Guided by the principle of “getting closer to customers,” the company continues to deepen its local presence, extend its distribution network further into local markets, and reach frontline installer partners.
Developments: Capitalizing on market opportunities to rapidly expand market share
The residential energy storage market is relatively cyclical. Although need-based demand from markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America provides some buffer, market trends remain closely tied to subsidy policies, oil and gas prices, and seasonal temperatures. Against this backdrop, the ability to capitalize on market windows and strengthen market position in a timely manner is particularly important.
Before 2025, Fox ESS’s market share in Australia never exceeded 5%, keeping the company outside the market’s leading tier.
On July 1, 2025, Australia launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Following the rollout of the subsidy, the market expanded severalfold. Fox ESS seized the opportunity and moved quickly to capture market share.
Fox ESS moved decisively in its market expansion and investment. It quickly built a local team of over 50 employees in Australia, established a large warehousing center, maintained sufficient inventory, and ensured rapid delivery. The company also launched a 24/7 after-sales hotline with a call answer rate of over 95%, further improving responsiveness to installers and end users.
Meanwhile, Fox ESS observed that the local subsidy can cover up to 50 kWh of capacity, leading users to favor larger-capacity systems to maximize subsidy benefits. In response to this trend, the company focused on promoting its EQ4800 product, which offers a maximum capacity of nearly 42 kWh per system, while the entire unit is shorter than a child, significantly reducing the space required for installation. This high-capacity, compact design directly addresses users’ core needs.
After May 1, 2026, Australia began phasing down subsidies based on capacity tiers. Fox ESS responded promptly by launching the CQ7, strategically targeting key capacity thresholds such as 14 kWh and 28 kWh to directly address user pain points, while rapidly adapting and adjusting its strategy in line with market changes.
Accurate market judgment and agile execution have enabled Fox ESS to maintain a firm position among the market leaders in Australia so far in 2026.
Conclusion
In the new era of residential energy storage, competition has become even more intense. Fox ESS offers a strong example of how an emerging player can rise through the ranks. Strong product capabilities, solid channel development, and sharp market insight and responsiveness have collectively enabled this young player to stand out from a large field of competitors.
Individually, these success factors are not particularly complex. However, consistently executing them and capturing every market opportunity requires strong organizational management and execution capabilities. A company’s strengths are never the result of isolated factors or chance, but rather a reflection of its overall organizational capabilities.
Recently, Fox ESS also launched its new C&I energy storage product, Power Beast, expanding from residential energy storage into the C&I segment and creating a second growth engine. As the residential energy storage market continues to evolve and C&I storage demand gains momentum in markets outside China, we look forward to seeing how Fox ESS will perform in this next stage.
